In part one of this weak-women series, we discovered that these vulnerable, gullible women were women in the church. They were women with many sins, with guilty consciences, controlled and led by their various lusts and passions, and easy prey for false teachers. The Scripture (2 Tim 3:6), tells us that these women allowed these false teachers to enter into, crept into, their household, to capture their minds and lead them astray.
Notice that the false teachers crept into the household of weak unsuspecting women in the church. Why were these women so easily deceived? Didn’t they hear the Word of God being taught week after week? Why didn’t they recognize these false teachers? Well, as I stated before, sin blinded them, and not to mention, false teachers don’t have a sign on their forehead that reads “I’m a false teacher, I’m here to deceive you”.
But also, I think the Scriptures gives us a few other reasons these women were bamboozled by these ministers of Satan (2 Cor 11:15).
#1- Lack of spiritual discernment- They had physical eyes to see the false teacher, but no spiritual eyes to recognize they were teaching false doctrine. They couldn’t identify truth from error. Partly because they were blinded by their sin. But also because they themselves didn’t know the truth. These church women were “always learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of truth” (2 Tim 3:7).
#2- Itching Ears- Guilt stricken, the false teachers had exactly what these women needed. They needed to be soothed and comforted. They needed to hear how much God loved them in spite of their sin, not to repent and turn away from their sin. These women wanted to hear that they could indulge in their lusts and passions, and seek after worldly desires. They didn’t want to “…endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires” (2 Tim 4:3)
#3- No desire for truth– These weak-women were already weighed down with sin, the last thing they wanted to hear was the truth about their sin. They didn’t want to hear the truth of the Word. They didn’t want their deeds to be exposed by the light, they wanted to keep their sins hidden in the dark. Therefore, they turned away their ears from the truth and turn aside to myths (2 Tim 4:4)
Blind, deceived and no longer wanting truth. What a horrible state to be in. And sadly, it gets worse.
